When I do my first PM this weekend, I was wondering if you keep the lid on the water cooler while youre grains are mashing. Seems like you would to keep the heat in, but is there a reason not to
 
yup.

Keep it on. Except when you are stirring. Kind of tricky to do with the lid on. ;)

Oh, and checking the temp, unless you have a fancy probe thermometer setup going.
 
I just leave the thermometer in the mash and open the lid after 30 minutes to check.

That's one nice thing about a very thick mash--you can stick a standard instant read thermometer in there and it will stay put.
