The smaller is alive and I think is a younger version of the larger specimen next to it, which is dead.

Very small bugger.

They spin a weak cocoon on the hop cone and attach to a near by cone or leaf and then munch away.

The lupulin gets exposed and I would assume makes it no good.

I noticed these worms last year, but didn't worry about it then.

Inchworm, inchworm Measuring the marigolds

Inchworm, name for the larvae of moths of the family Geometridae, a large, cosmopolitan group with over 1200 species indigenous to North America

(Although the most common sort are about 1 cm, that just doesn't scan.)

I sprayed with combo tobacco tea, soap mixture to kill/deter any further infestation into cones. Will spray again next weekend cuz it rained today for the first time in 4 weeks...I should have sprayed a couple weeks ago to get it to rain, ha!

Dipel dust. Contains Bacillus thuringiensis which will make the worms or caterpillars stop eating and die. It's safe to use right up until harvest.
