I'm kicking around recipe ideas for the centennial single hop IIPA I've been planning for a while. I'm pretty set on the hop schedule, but I'm wide open on changing the grain bill. I do partial mashes in a 3 gal cooler, so I can mash up to about 7lbs of grain. Current recipe shows an OG of 1.086 and an IBU of 89.8.

Grain/Extract/Sugar

% Amount Name Origin Potential SRM
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
26.1 3.00 lbs. Pale Malt(2-row) Great Britain 1.038 3
8.7 1.00 lbs. Biscuit Malt Great Britain 1.035 35
8.7 1.00 lbs. Crystal 55L Great Britian 1.034 55
52.2 6.00 lbs. Muntons DME - Light England 1.046 5
4.3 0.50 lbs. Wheat Malt America 1.038 2

Potential represented as SG per pound per gallon.

edited to add: planning to pitch on a cake of Safale-56 from a pale ale batch

Why the wheat malt, out of curiousity? Usually don't see much wheat in IPAs.

Head retention. ;)

Jar, that is A LOT of biscuit malt. I'd seriously back that down to only a 1/4 lb. A little goes a long way. Because you are steeping it, possibly a half pound. but no more than that, honestly.

OK. Thanks. That's why I posted. Note that I am mashing, I just can't mash enough grain to go AG because I brew in my kitchen. I use the setup in RichBrewer's thread.

Yeah, I've been making a bunch of beers in styles that I and most of my friends like, and now it's time to make one that most of them will hate. There are a few hardcore hopheads in the group, and they'll be getting bottles as Christmas presents :)

If you're interested, I'd love to trade a few bottles for some Pliny.
