I tested my final version of the ekeggle and it worked great! I used a 5500w element hooked up to a 240v 30A outlet, using the breaker as a switch. It took 7 gallons of 64F water to boil in 30 minutes! I'll probably end up making a HLT too, but with a 110v element.

So far it's just a direct plug to the 30amp outlet. I'm planning on getting some sort of control on it, but for now it'll do, I guess you can call it a proof of concept version... :D
 
Some of the things tht I have heard are
1) 5500w will carmalize if not turned down. 5500 to start a 10gal, then reduce when boiling
2) use a temp controller with a SSR relay + heat sink (this is what all the cool kids are doing)
3) a controller from an old range to control the amount of current.
