I'll state first off that my project isn't brewing related. I came across this site while research temperature controllers and I was amazed at the discussions! Far better than electronics forums! However, since my project uses exactly the same equipment, I was hoping that some of my questions could be answered.

I need to use this specific temperature controller (cheap and programmable).

There are a few output options:

Relay: SPST, 5A @ 250 Vac resistive
Voltage Pulse: 14 V, 10 to -20% (max 40 mA)
Current: 4 to 20 mA

This controller is different from the Love models (that everyone here seems to like) in that the amp rating on the outputs is low. I need to run a 12A heater that will exceed the 5A rating for the SPST. I am guessing I will have to use SSRs to control the heater. Is that correct?

If so, which output option do I want? Are different SSR available to work with the different outputs?

I hope to wire it all up in a package just like this:

Also, just to confirm, these controllers are designed to run right off 120V out of the wall? Any suggestions? Here is the terminal diagram for the controller.

Or find on page two here: http://www.omega.com/Manuals/manualpdf/M4704.pdf

Thanks!

Any of the output options work...because they all have a relay. Looks like 1 has 2 relays, 1 has a dc pulse + relay, 1 has a 4-20mA signal. Probably get the 2 relay unless you need the pulse or current.
Yes, it runs on 100-240 VAC 50/60 Hz. US Houshold wall socket is 120 VAC 60hz, so it will work fine.
I don't have a SSR to recommend. 12A is getting fairly large, but I'm sure there is something. A heater is a resistive load, which helps.

What are you building?

I'm researching salmon physiology, particularly how they respond to temperature. I need a programmable controller to ramp up temperature in a tank while I monitor physiological variables.

Can the relay outputs actually control a SSR? Most SSR's I've looked at require an input voltage of 3-32V DC. Like these ones (scroll down to AC power solid state relays)

http://www.futurlec.com/RelSS.shtml

so wouldn't I need the 14V DC pulse output?

the unit with 14v dc pulse output will drive an ssr directly with no additional wiring or power supply needed. when you go ssr shopping, make sure you get one that has an input voltage range that is compatable with your controller's output since ssr's are available with several input voltage ratings.

A heat sink makes sense. I'm going to call the company that sells the controller and ask. The heater I currently have is a 1kW so things could get hot. I'm just trying to get this sorted out so I can order the controller first thing Monday morning.

Looks like the same company that makes the controller also makes SSRs with either DC or AC control. I guess I could just get the relay/relay model then?

For the temp sensor, I'm not too sure. What's usually best? The cheaper the better. Something like this looks good to me.

Thanks for all the help. Very much appreciated.
