Just finished building a stir plate.

PC Recycling Store

24 volt PC power supply fan $.050

Punched hard drive for magnet $1.00

Radio Shack

On/Off switch $6.49

Potentiometer $4.00

Quick wiring disconnects $2.49

Electrical Tape $2.00

Found Around the House

6 volt power supply from broken alarm clock FREE

Hardware Store

Various nuts, bolts, spacers, and a washer $4.67

Total $28.14

The on/off switch on the right...uh...turns it on and off. The knob (potentiometer) on the left controls the speed.

Nice! Im currently in the process of putting mine together, I just need to get some magnets that fit my fan and enclosure.

I have no electrical experience outside of a 6th grade class project making a simple circuit with a switch. There are some bad schematics online that are literally just wrong. This one worked http://www.instructables.com/id/Radio-Controlled-Camera-Pod/step2/Wiring-in-your-Rheostats/ Just wire the on/off switch in the neutral line between the power source and fan. Not that you needed my help, but I figured I'd lend it if it can help someone.
