So, I'm cyber stalking Rodney, the creator of Longshot Blackened hops American Black for a recipe. But I have not yet been successful. From what I gathered the style is more commonly called Cascadian Black. I'm dying to make one of these and hoping it comes out like that amazing beer Rodney made. Can anyone suggest an extract recipe to get somewhere in the ballpark? I'm still a very new brewer and haven't made the jump to AG yet.

Thanks in Advance!

That recipe looks great! I think I'll start there and see how I can tune it.

Thanks!

(Unless someone has actually found the recipe for Blackened Hops) :D

I assume this is the American Black Ale or Black IPA style you're referring too. If so you should try Sublimely Self-Righteous by Stone. It's very good.

I converted ChemEMc's recipe from this thread to extract...
It was outstanding.

Thanks for the recipe!! Definitly going on my brew schedule!

But I think its a bit more bitter than what I'm looking for atm. Blackened hops sits around 80 IBU I believe.

Still no reply from Rodney :(

for an extract recipe, just some crystal and carafa and you should be fine. I would stick with lower crystals like 40L, max 60L.

as for hops, from what Ive tasted in some of the better ones compared to the lesser ones, I prefer more Piney, Herbal, floral hops over the big grapefruit/citrusy hops. I just think grapefruit clashes with the roasty notes. I think chinook, nugget, simcoe, centennial, and athanum are good choices. I found being stronger on the pine/herbal and adding a touch floral to the mix. My favorite blend thus far on experimental batches ive made was heavier on the chinook with simcoe and athanum to compliment.

@ dirtrymartini

I agree on the floral hops, I'm gonna do some research for flavor profiles of these hops and play around a bit. This will be an excellent learning experience!
