A clean glass with no soap residue and not cleaned in dishwasher with jetdry.

Head retention I think is dependent on protein content.

Some beers just don't maintain a large head.
 
doesn't rye jsut give a crisp taste? That what I thought it was.

Also maybe some wheat and use 6 row instead?
 
I've actually been getting a decent amount of head lately. When I racked my last batch to secondary, I bottled the yeasty stuff that was left below the spigot. Those are the ones that lacked head...a result of autolysis perhaps? The rest of the bottles that I got from the secondary have a fine head when poured.
