Title pretty much says it all... I got a Keg today from the local salvage yard!!

I want to do a weldless valve system in and was wondering if I could pick up everything I need at the local hardware store.

Anybody done this?? Drawbacks?

BTW... I've already seen most of the websites that sell them ready to roll. I just like having excuses to walk through the man's playground. :D

You should be able to find most of the stuff you need as long as you don't mind brass. Lowes/HD don't sell any stainless parts in my area. Some people seem to have problems finding the washers and the orings...

I was just at Home Depot the other day in Reno. Couldn't really find what I needed. They have ball valves but I couldn't find much else. Been wondering about food grade seals/o-rings as well. Employees just looked at me cross-eyed when I asked.

Mirilis posted some links here https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/cheapest-suppliers-common-equipment-84456/ for parts and supplies.

On a similar subject, I've read about people sweating fittings on to the ballvalve for a down tube into the keg. Doesn't that use lead? Is that safe? I found a "no lead" ball valve: http://www.discovervalve.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=D&Product_Code=101113&Category_Code=noleadbrassbv Is this a better idea?

bargain fittings is the way to go... I spent a lot of time trying to piece together a stainless set for cheaper than their prices, and couldn't...

I found out the hard way that STAINLESS FITTINGS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AT LOCAL STORES. In the Chicago area, the following five stores carry brass, galvanized, & "black steel" NPT fittings, but NOT stainless steel:
- Home Depot
- Lowes
- Menards
- Ace
- Crafty Beaver

Are you all referring to bargain fittings at greatbargain.net?

Haha no. Bargain Fittings is a vendor on this site. I've ordered lots of stuff from there and been very pleased with service and quality.

EDIT: Wow.. just typed greatbargain.net into my browser and ended up at bargainfittings.com - so yeah, I guess that's what we were referring to. Learn something new everyday!
