I'm thinking about entering a Lemon Blonde and a Black IPA/Cascadian Dark Ale in a local county fair competition. It's not BJCP and the catergories are a little different. Which ones should I enter these under?

Here's how they've got it broken down:

Class

Lagers
1 Light
2 Medium
3 Dark

Ales
4 Light
5 Medium
6 Dark
7 Porter
8 Stout
9 Bock
10 Strong beer (o.g. of 1.070 or greater)
11 Wheat

Others
12 Fruit Flavored
13 Vegetable Flavored
14 Spice Flavored
15 Cider
16 Specialty/Experimental/Historical
17 Any Other Beer not listed above

Mead
18 Any Mead

I think I will enter the Lemon Blonde under #12 and the Black IPA under #16. Agree? Disagree?

I agree with Lemon Blonde under #12, but I'd put the CDA/Black IPA under #6. It's a dark ale, and it's not a Porter (#7), or Stout (#8), so I'd say it goes there.

Weird that they have porter and stout as specific and different styles when the other categories are so wide

Yeah, I thought this breakdown was kind of weird too. I think I will stay with my initial plan of entering 12 and 16.

Thanks all for your input!
