My LHBS guy said he had to stop selling those because he kept getting people bringing them back with problems. He said the analog one (made by Johnson or something like that) is much more reliable. He's had his for 10 years.
 
I had a Johnson that died after about 5 years- replaced with a Ranco. What I like about the Ranco is that I can use it to control heat when I need it too.
 
2 months here, no probs. My guess is many of the complaints were due to bad wiring by the owner. The whole temperature controller itself is a pretty simple setup if you have any electronics background. I went for the "store bought" cause I know it'd look cleaner than anything I'd put together myself ;)

Some places do offer them pre-wired, but it's $15 or so more.
