Nasty Accident at work!

Yesterday I had an employee come literally within inched of being killed at a construction project we are working on at a power plant. He was sitting on the tailgate of the truck when the boom of the concrete pumper truck came down on our truck. Just a few inches could have meant the difference between life or death for him. But fortunately he came out with only a few minor cuts and a stoved up shoulder and arm (he goes to the doctor again today to make sure there's not any internal soft tissue damage). I was on site when it happened but working in an area where I couldn't see what happened. One of my other guys called me and told me I needed to get down there and briefly told me what happened but I still wasn't prepared for what I was when I drove within view of the scene. The concrete pumper had the boom straight up in the air and didn't have his outriggers out. The pictures really explain everything the best.

sounds pretty crazy though. Glad no one was killed. bet that guy got in some hot water for not having his outriggers out.

Wow. I saw something very similar to that last summer here in Las Vegas. The casinos here are always expanding and remodeling. They're always trying to one-up each other.
The Venetian was a big job last summer (it still is). A concrete pumper much like the one in your pictures was pumping from Las Vegas Blvd (The Strip) ealry in the morning. He had his boom out so far that even with his outriggers out the whole left side of the truck came up off the ground! The only thing that kept him from tipping over was the temporary concret barricade between the sidewalk and the jobsite. He just kinda "leaned" his whole truck up against it.

That's crazy...and amazing that he escaped alive.

SOMEbody's gonna get sued...

A couple years back, a manager on the jobsite of one of my buildings fell through the opening where the clerestory was going, and was killed. They didn't have any ropes or railings up, and I still can't believe that the family didn't sue. Maybe they settled. Either that, or it was the deceased's responsibility to put up said barriers in the first place.

That is pretty freaky. One never knows what a day will bring. Glad the man got off with mostly a big scare.

Well, I just saw on the news that there was a death today on the Las vegas Strip.

Project City Center is a HUGE job right now in Las Vegas. Thousands of construction workers are involved with this one. It is such a big job that people are starting to get hurt. There have been a few deaths so far. There were a couple guys that died a few months ago (fellow carpenters) when the form that they tied off to fell because it had not been secured to the work when the crane flew it into place. 2 more workers were injured in the accident.

Now today there was apparently a falling death. I just saw a quick mention of it on a commercial for the news. There is supposed to be a full story tonight at 11:00.

Vegas is booming right now, and with that comes injuries. It really makes you think.

Damn.

Apparently he was an Ironworker. He fell approximately 60 feet, from the third story of some scaffold. They say he was wearing his harness, but obviously it failed. They are investigating to see if he had it on correctly.
Osha shut down the entire job-site. The guy died on the scene.
