Does anybody have any suggestion for a substitution for grains of paradise. My LHBS doesn't carry it and I can't find it in my grocery store.

Some folks use small amounts of crushed black pepper.
Another option is Nigella Seeds from a middle eastern grocery.
But if there's an african/carribean market around you they should have grains of paradise.

You might want to ask them both if they have Gop or "guinea grains"

Grains of paradise are peppery, but their flavor is very unique and complex. They're peppery, earthy, a little lemony if I remember right. So basically, do whatever Revvy said
