Just wanted to share some feedback as I'd be bummed if I ran into these problems without knowing about them.
Recently, these two sister shops have been having some major problems.
Starting in about July, people who purchased milled grains from Stomp them Grapes started complaining about a bad crush. It turns out STG had a bad mill, but didn't tell anyone for a while. Eventually, they put up a sign that they were ordering a new mill, which I understand is now on its way. Unfortunately, for the last couple months people were purchasing grains which were improperly ground and so were reporting unusually low efficiencies. Please note that this info is based on the experience of several people from my local homebrew club and not my own experience, so take that for what it is.
I was in their Boulder store (Hop to It) yesterday, and their hops refrigerator was completely down. I spoke to the guys about some hops options and they didn't mention this, but of course I noticed once I pulled a bag out of the fridge. I asked whether they knew the fridge was out and they said they did, but they didn't mention any plans to fix it. Unfortunately, once they do fix the issue I presume they'll just power up the fridge and sell all of the hops which have been super warm for several days as if nothing happened.
I hate to come down on any LHBS as I know it's a tough industry, but these issues are unacceptable and really hurt their customers. Hopefully they'll improve their efforts in the future, but in the mean time the folks in my club and I will be shopping more at Beer at Home + the Brew Hut.
