Does a cooler used for an MLT need to be scratch free like a fermenter? I have an old cooler that I might convert to an MLT but I haven't analyzed it closely for scratches yet. I was thinking it might not be critical since after mash the wort goes into the kettle for boiling.

Nothing pre-boil, (or during boil), needs to be sanitized.

Scratches inhibit sanitation since bacteria can hide in them.

But nothing pre-boil needs to be sanitized. So no worries!
