What else is a substitute for DME I might have already on hand? Can I use a bottle of beer for a yeast starter?

Your bottle of beer is already fermented. It won't help.

As the poster above notes, you can make your own starter wort. Target between 1.030 and 1.040 and just mash a small amount of grain. Depending on how hot you keep your water heater, your tap water might do it (not mine, which is around 130 degrees).

Malta Goya will work in a pinch if you have a Hispanic grocery store around.

I am a extract brewer and do not have any Grain in hand either! I am also stationed overseas and do not have a local homebrew store near me. Any other thoughts?
