I brewed a milk stout yesterday and after getting it in the fermenter I took an SG reading. I tasted it after doing this and it's reminiscent of cigarette/ashtray taste. I'm assuming that the taste will mellow out once it ferments a bit, or will it?

Grains used:

8lbs 2 row
1lb roasted barley
.5lb munich
.5lb chocolate malt
.5lb crystal 60l

I'm assuming that the taste is coming from the roasted barley.

Thanks!

Yes, that "ashy" taste is coming from the roasted malt. It will mellow quite a bit. I tend to use less roasted barley than others do because I find it a bit acrid.

That's good to know. I like stouts, but this is the first time I've ever brewed one so it was a bit shocking :)

I get that a lot with Smuttynose Robust Porter, though it tastes more like Cigar. It doesn't fade in that beer. They must use a lot of roasted barley.
