This will be my second brew (1st non-kit) and was looking for something simple to try out in a 3 gallon batch. Any comments or suggestions on this American Pale Ale recipe would be greatly appreciated.

I can't figure out how to export from Beersmith, so if I've left anything out, let me know.

Thanks in advance!

1# Crystal 20L - steeped prior to boil
3 1/3# Light DME - 60 mins
1/4oz Amarillo - 60 mins
1/4oz Amarillo - 30 mins
1/4oz Simcoe - 30 mins
1/4oz Amarillo - 10 mins
1/4tsp Irish Moss - 10 mins

Plan on doing a secondary fermentation (possibly with some gelatin depending on coloring)

Beersmith says it meets all standards (1.051SG, 42.3IBU, 8.9SRM, 5%ABV).
Just wanting to know what the experts think.

My advice: drop down the Crystal malt unless you like your pales to finish pretty sweet. For a 3 gallon batch I'd probably stick to around maybe 8 oz or so. It may not fall within the BJCP color guidelines, but who cares, it'll still taste good.

Also, for hops, Amarillo and Simcoe is a great combo. That said, I wouldn't waste any of their deliciousness in anything but the last 15 minutes of the boil. I like a 60-15-5-0 hopping schedule for my (I)PAs, with a cheap neutral bittering hop at 60, such as Magnum or Warrior.
