does anyone have a smooth brown porter recipe they'd like to share.

I haven't decided what I'm brewing next just tossing around some ideas. I've been reading Designing Great Beers and it's got me thinking about Porters!!!

Here's a recipe my buddy recently brewed up...mighty tasty.

Papa Jack's Porter

1 lb Crystal 55L
12 oz black patent
6 oz chocolate
6 lb M&F light DME
2 oz molasses

1.5 oz EKG (5.7%aa) at 60 min
0.5 oz Fuggles at 15 min
0.5 oz EKG at 5 min

1 tsp Irish moss

Wyeast 1084 Irish Ale

bottle with 1-1/4 cp M&F light DME
OG around 1.054

Walker-san's AGP1.x

4.5#2-row
4.5#Vienna
.75#Chocolate
.25#patent
1#crystal 60

1.5oz EKG 60
0.75oz Fuggle 20
0.5oz EKG 5

Windsor ale yeast

I brewed this and it turned out awesome. Nice and smooth, not too bitter and a slight coffee taste from the patent. Next time I may lower the vienna malt and compensate with some munich to get slightly maltier.

Hey Cheyco, what do you think about scaling back the vienna to 3.5# subbing in 1# munich AND adding 1# biscuit?

That sounds yummy but you may want to up the hops slightly to compensate. The way the recipe was, I found it needed a bit more maltiness, not a ton.

Then again, that might just be crazy enough to work...

:D

I too am reading Ray Daniels and Randy Mosher, along with listening to Jamil. A good porter is hard to beat and many folks out west tell of a fantastic porter by Deschutes called Black Butte porter. A clone recipe appeared if BYO a while back and I thought the grain bill interesting. I have 12 gallons fermenting like crazy right now.

I know this is an ancient thread, but Musthavbeer, how did that Black Butte Porter clone turnout?

OP, did you find any smooth porter recipes you like?

I want to make a smooth vanilla porter and have been checking out Denny Conn's. Can anyone vouch for its smoothness?

Yep, I'd like to know as well.. I just finished the last bottle of it a couple of days ago. I don't think they sell it at Costco here in this part of CA.
