Last night I left out my gravity sample, with the hydrometer floating in it. It was at 1.052 and then I forgot about it. I just walked past it and it has a krausen on top and has dropped to 1.035. I've captured a vigorous yeast here!
 
I like to leave the sample and let it ferment. I t almost always finishes faster than the fermenter.
 
i've had this happen a few times as well. the resulting beer wasn't horrible either, even sans carbonation.
