Okay I have not been brewing for very long, have only made 4 batches so far, and I was wondering has anyone ever tried adding nuts to their brews? I was thinking of making up something with black walnuts and was wondering if anyone could tell me how it tastes, if anyone has tried it. Also was curious as to how much and when to add it? It will be a extract brew and I had thought about putting it in with the grains when I steeped them. Will this work, or do I need to add them to the secondary like fruit is? Please help I think this might make a good brew but would love some opinions. Thanks.

Most of the recipes I've seen that have a "nut" flavor (e.g. Jamil's Chocolate Hazelnut Porter) use an extract for the flavor. Using actual nuts can be tricky, since they have oils in them that can impact flavor retention and other aspects of the beer.

That said, people have used actual nuts. I believe some people talk about it here:
