I want to scale down a 5 gallon recipe to 2.5 gallons. I was wondering if I should do a full boil of the full 2.5 gallons? Beersmith scales the boil size to 1.33 gallons and then says to top off in the fermentor. I have no reason to doubt Beersmith but if I have the capacity for a full boil why not go that route? Thoughts?

I am experimenting with hops and wanted a smaller batch size.

I would suggest doing a full boil because you will get better hop utilization. Of course, if you don't do a full boil, you can add more bittering hops to make up for it. But, then you may have issues of a darker brew.

Ok, Should I go into beersmith and change the boil volume to 2.5 gallons then? so I get the right Bitterness level?
