Anyone been? Recommend a hotel in the area? They closest ones have the crappiest reviews, lol.

Also, any thing to stop off and see on the way back to the east bay? I wanted to hit up Eel River brewery again, but its 3 hours in the wrong direction, they have awesome growlers and great food though.

Depends what you are looking for. If you want to be close to a bar scene then I would stay somewhere like Hotel Diamond. That is going to be in the downtown area. It is only a couple miles away from the brewery. The bar scene is a lot of college bars but after this week, the college kids all leave because it's finals week for Chico State. There are a couple notable bars to check out with ridiculously low prices. If you like beer, the Banshee has really good pub food and a good selection. If the bar scene is not your thing, then I would stay at Oxford Suites. There really isn't too much around it though. It is within a mile of the brewery. That is where my family all stays when they come and visit. Beyond that, the hotels are pretty bad.

Thanks!

When I was in Eureka we stopped at a brewery (eel river maybe ?) And we saw a guy walking out with a corny keg full of beer. Does sierra fill cornies by chance?

eel river is excellent in many respects (i just cracked one of their bourbon aged barleywines after hanging there for a few hours when i was up there - whoa...) but if you've been there and are into beer, there are a plethora of breweries closer that could use a look or two; lagunitas, RRB, moylans, GB, bear republic, etc.... (very west centric)

as for sierra - i'm quasi-local (santa rosa, two hours away) and i've yet to make the pilgrimage to chico. i'm dying to go. post your opinions - i'm curious.

which reminds me - if people know moylans, they know "kilt lifter" (apologies to the lawsuit) - and they have an imperial kilt lifter on tap now (won't ever be bottled, afaik) that is intense...

Dang.. how do you get to SN in two hours. Back in the day.. my wife made it to Chico where she went to college.. in 3 hours... I can't do it that fast. Heck, this was going the short way past Clear Lake and on to Williams.. You must FLY. grin

Chico is a great college town with some good pubs.. as mentioned above. For college students, it has to be good and cheap.

Eel river was a fantastic experience. Out door eating, cats roaming around for the kid to chase. UNBELIEVABLY great stout. I enjoyed their triple executioner while eating so much, I brought a grolwer home (fantastic growlers btw) but unfortunately it must have gotten too hot during the trip, as it tasted like crap when I got home. I would like to go back but unfortunately its no where near our travels. Fantastic place.

We MAY be going to lagunitas carnival thing they have going on this weekend. Not decided yet. Bear republic does sound like an interesting stop.

Meet us up there (we're coming fro. Hayward LOL), we'll be going on my birthday, June 6th. We really can't wait to go. The girlfriend is an eco-nut and a brewer so she can't wait to see the tour in regards to self sustainability, and I can't wait to taste SN beers you can only get in the tap room.

There is not much between Chico and Sacto/Vacaville...... just Tea party members. Western Pacific Brewery and Feather Falls casino brewery in Oroville is about all I can think of.

Dont forget to get on the tour it happens twice a day. They take you to the bottling line, sample wort and let you stick your face in thousands of pounds of hops and there is a full sample of all their beers at the end....I wouldn't miss it.

I actually just did the tour with my grandpa, dispite having lived here for the past 18 years or so. It was excellent and would recommend it. As far as staying here I couldn't say. Never have rented a room and friends and family stay at my house.

But I do know each employee can get a corny with their paycheck. So I know they have them, just a matter if they are open to the public.
