I periodically brew a single hop Amber Ale using a standard recipe but swapping out hops. Its a decent brew with nice, but mellow, malt flavors. The beer has been a great showcase for new hop trials. I am thinking of doing this again with Sorachi Ace. I have heard different things about this hop. My question is, will this hop be too intense if used on its own? Should I do a single hop brew with it or save it for a beer where it will be blended with other hops? Thanks in advance!

Must be a bad day to ask hop questions. I asked about NZ Hallertau today and got zilch. I don't know anything about Sorachi Ace hops, but I like your idea of single hop ambers. I just might start doing this too. Cheers.

Normally I use Sorachi in a Saison and sparingly because it is potent. I personally think that you need some acidity to balance this hop and I don't know if you will get that with an Amber. If you do use it in an Amber, then I would blend it with some other hops.

I've used Sorachi Ace numerous times for "Indian" Wheat beers. It has a fairly intense lemony quality that goes well with a lighter bodied beer. It may get a little funky in something maltier like an amber. It is fairly high in AAU% and can be "intense", but in my opinion is fine as a stand alone hop. I've used it alone and with other more citrusy hops like amarillo, citra, etc. Just not sure about in an amber tho. You never know until you try!
