i am using LD Carlson yeast nutrient and energizer in my mead and when i mix it in boiled water it has a strong ammonia smell. i know there is DAP in it and contains ammonia but i am wondering if this is normal? or safe?

well i boil a very small amount of water to disolve the nutrient and the energizer says to apply heat. there shouldnt be a problem with the boiling water right?

I've been throwing a big pinch of the stuff in with 5-10 min to go. Whoops
Nothing wrong with following directions.

White Labs: "Dosage Rate: 1oz per 5BBLs (1/2 tsp per 5 gallons) during the last 10 minutes of the boil"

Wyeast: "Usage Instructions: Dissolve Wyeast Nutrient in warm water. Add solution to kettle 10-15 minutes prior to end of boil."

This may be a stupid question to some but why are you using yeast nutrients ? There is plenty of nutrient for yeast in well made beer wort.
