I am going to put on deck a belgian strong dark that I have been wanting to brew for about a year now, and I am wondering what the difference is between Hallertauer "Tradition" and the Hallertauer "Hershbrucker" hops
any ideas??
Cheers
JJ

Tradition can be substituted for Hersbrucker directly if you are using it for aroma or flavor additions, but since it has a higher alpha acid content than Hersbrucker, you need to calculate the amount for bittering based on HBUs or similar.

So basicly there the same? Or am I missing something. The only one of the hallertauer family that is different is the mittelfruh, correct?
Thanks for the links guys
Cheers
JJ

I would say "basically", yes. Their alpha and beta acids are however, flipped. I.e. Hersbrucker- a: ~4-5%, b: 6-8%. Tradition- a: ~6-8%, b: 4-5%. So........+1 on billtzk's advice

I would use Mt Hood if you can't get the real thing. (German Hallertauer)
