It was disappointing. I got it at my grocery store. It came from The Pasty Oven, Quinnesec, MI.

http://www.pastys.com/index.html

It was semi frozen and I baked it for 45 minutes...

The crust was great flakey and tasty, but overall the beef/pork was pretty bland. I ended up slitting it open and shaking on some Old Bay.

If you think of it, wouldja bring me a real one on your way down here? I'd lurve you long time if you did.

:D

Those are pretty common in northern and central California, pretty much anywhere there once was a deep shaft mining community with a large Cornish population. Apparently they were a traditional meal for miners, with meat, vegetables and even fruit cooked into separate pockets in the same piece of dough. Usually, the predominant seasonings are onion and black pepper and they are a bit bland.

Last year I had a few in Bath, England...there were several pasty shops that sold a wide variety. They were pretty much the same as the ones in California. You may have had a "real one!"

Oh come on Rev what would you expect from a store bought Pasty shame on you. Just get in your car and head towards the bridge I am sure they don't have that much snow up that way.

MMMMKay. I'll bring pasties for you. Remind me about 5 days before Christmas, and I'll go get some and stick them in the freezer. I'll bring a few- my dad and brother want some too. But........my memory sucks. I'm serious about reminding me.

At least that will be an incentive for you to meet up with me!

HEY- I'm still waiting for mine!!!!!!!! I got dibbs!!!!!

Ah, nevermind, I'll make my own, it's easy.

Speaking of pasties, was in the UP this summer and thought the pasties at the Taquahmenon Falls brewpub were quite good. But was a week or two too early for the Blueberry Wheat. Did pick enough wild blueberries for a pie or two, they were wonderful. And had my first ever taste of thimbleberries; walked through all kinds of woods finding, picking and eating them. Yooper, have you ever added thimbleberries to an ale?

I love thimbleberries, but never added them to beer. But, to be honest, I am one of the few women in the world who think the words "fruit" and "beer" should never be in the same sentence, let alone the same glass.

Yep, Short Drive, your pasties remained in Sause's car as well. I'm pretty sure Brewmeister Jeff wanted some, too. Sause cleaned up with a lifetime supply of frozen pasties!

I have to ask. Pasties. Is that pronounced like the things that strippers used to wear? I haven't encountered them before, but they look tasty.

Well, all this talk about pasties made me hungry- so I went to the kitchen and made some. They are baking now, and smell so good! I didn't have any rutabagas (go figure) but I was able to find just about everything else I needed. I used cubed venison instead of ground beef. In an hour- they'll be done! :ban:

Post food porn, please! :)

A Pastie without rutabaga?

Oh my god...a *gulp* Venison Pastie???

Preparing for another keyboard outage due to excessive drool...:D

Well, believe it or not- BOOM! Gone! My kids said they weren't hungry, but I picked them up while the pasties were in the oven and once they came in the door they were smitten. Just a little 1/2 pastie left for my lunch tomorrow! Not one picture.

Yep. Venison. Small chunks, not ground. It was good, but it'll be a while before we have them again. I used a stick and a half of butter in the crust.........I'll have to wait until my arteries unclog before I make them again.

I make a lot of fruit salads, esp in the summer. I usually eat a bowl in the evening while having a pint. I love beer and food combos and that includes fruit. I have never made a fruit beer though.

Shoot, my boys eat me out of house and home at 5 and 3...can't imagine what they'll do at 18 and 16. :D ;)

Grama T's Red Onion Pasty in Negaunee are the best!

Albie's Pastys aren't too bad for supermarket fair from some troll company either. As kids we would always stop along 2 on the way north or south and pickup lunch at the roadside stands. Catsup and/or mustard but never gravy. :p

Sure you betcha. Ga demers. I was up in the U.P. a few weeks ago, and I never did get around to getting a pasty. The group I was with wouldn't stop, and I was almost out of money on the way back. I should have sold some blood or something to get me a pasty.

Luckily, I work about 10 minutes from Barb's Copper County Pasty's & Pizza's in Clawson. I really think that they are the closest thing that you can find down here with out making them at home. In fact, I might get one for lunch tomorrow if I can scrounge up a sawbuck.

But here is a serious question...how do you all like your pasty's?? Plain, with gravy, or with ketchup? I'm a gravy man myself, but I have heard that asking for gravy north of the bridge can you you a beat down.

I like them plain, by my family eats them with ketchup.

Which reminds me- I bought frozen pasties yesterday. Some with rutabaga and some without. Whoever is coming to the Dragonmeade in Warren on Friday can have some! They'll be still frozen, in my truck in a cooler.

I imagine Revvy will want one or two, but anybody else?

Ketchup or brown mustard but usually plain with a brown ale.

Gravy on your pasty?! That's for poutine, you heathen! :D

(sorry for late addition to thread)

Every year a bunch of us go camp on the shores of the Dead River upstream of Marquette, which means we have to stop at Lawry's at least once (usually once on the way in, and once to the store in Ishpeming on the way home). Is that the best pasty joint in town?

I would still take a cudighi over a pasty, though.

When Yoop came down the day after Christmas she let me have her Pasties :D Erm, I mean she brought me a couple of frozen one's . I had one the other night with some homemade gravy, and it was fantastic, much better than that other one I had...

YUM!!!

Um, still waitin'! And I'll take mine with rutabaga.
Meh, nevermind, as I said earlier, I'll make my own.

Well, you can either come up here and pick them up, or wait until I come down there in March.

I've never had Lawry's, so I don't know if they are the best in the UP. I like the local one here in town, called "The Pasty Corner". It's easy to find- it's, um, right on the corner. :D

Guess it'll take a Southerner to fix 'em right.

I can't knock Southern cooking...hush puppies, BBQ, you name it. I love it!

But you guys can screw up other regional cuisine. Having drawn butter with steamed crabs is SACRILEGE!! Makes me freakin' psycho!!!

;)

I'm making up a few pasties for tomorrow's dinner, I believe! Had my first pasty at Tapeley Manor, Devon in 2007.

Chuck steak, rutabaga or turnip, carrot, potato, onion and a lump of butter inside. Salt and pepper, of course. Sometimes I cheat and use roll-out pie crust for the pastry, but I'll do it right this time. :D

I've been wanting to make pasties ever since I had my first good one. I'd probably mix it up a bit, but very close. Making the crust is a PITA, but worth it if you know how to do it. Damn I'm hungry. Soon the Dr. visit will be over and I can go back to eating!

One of the newer bottle shops here in Portland, Saraveza, is also a pasty shop. Great beer, and tasty pasties? Sign me up!
