What does # stand for

I've seen it all over but can't get a handle on what it means. Does it mean pounds? Cups?

I did a search on the forums and couldn't come up with anything.

I experienced it in England. I was using a British phone card to call back to the States and the recording/woman said "and finish by pressing the hash button." As I held the phone, I asked my coworkers... "what the hell is the hash button?" (stupid American )

Also I'm not sure that hash is necessarily from europe. "Bang" (!) and "Hash" (#) are used fairly frequently when related to software and general IT stuff.

the funny part is i kinda do. Its the storage area in my apartment that i've turned into my "Brew-Cave"

its got my fermenters, bottle collection, and random stuff i've collected through the years.
