The title should explain it.

I'm splitting my 5 gallon Amarillo/Maris Otter SMASH into two 2.5gallon batches. I'll be using two different yeast strains for each. Would a starter be necessary when using Wyeast smack packs? I would rather make starters to help out fermentation lag and to make sure the yeast is good. I don't want to overpitch.

I don't think you're in any danger of overpitching, but if you're using the bigger smackpacks and they're pretty fresh it's probably not critical in this case to make a starter.

Well, I decided to make a starter anyway. Good thing I did. The Scottish Ale yeast pack didn't swell. Hopefully I can revive it before Sunday. If not, I can visit LHBS tomorrow.
