So my girlfriend (or I guess I should get in the habit of saying EX-girlfriend) and I split after living together for 3 1/2 years. This has been very hard on me and my life seems to have changed dramatically. I have since had to move back in with mom (never fun going back, especially when she lives in an 1000 sq. ft house with my 18yo sister too..).

I have a vacation from work and I would be off from school next week. I am wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to do. I have a 2008 ford focus and get great gas mileage. On top of all this, my friends have jobs and probably can't get the time off. I don't tend to do well on my own, but this might be a good growing experience. I have a buddy in Portland, OR (Beaverton specifically) that I MIGHT be able to hit up..

Anyway, given this current situation, what would you guys do?

NOTE: I am not rich and most of the money I have saved is for a downpayment on a house, I would like to keep this around $500. It doesn't have to be the whole week. Still possible? Let me know ASAP so I can try to plan. I would like to leave this Friday.

Some sort of road trip is in order.

You could probably head up the coast and hit up a few breweries on the way. If you decide to head into OR, maybe start a seperate thread with an trip plan. I'm sure some of the OR HBT members would be willing to throw some hospitality or at least some beer in your direction.

Have fun.

Borrow a tent and camp while on the road. Not sure about CA but elsewhere ~$12/night. And you get some thinking time in as well.

A road trip is DEFINITELY the road I am most considering. I am just wondering how I would handle being alone, when I am so used to having someone around me for the last close to 4 years.. But I guess since I don't feel too comfortable in my new "home," I won't get the usual home sickness that I typically get.

I used to be very shy as well until taking a job requiring to travel 95% and always alone. I grew a great deal as an individual and am much more comfortable with myself and around strangers. I know a few days is different than a couple years, but time on your own is a great thing. Plan a trip up the coast meeting different HBT members. I bet you'll even find a few willing to put you up for the evening!

Road trip to Oregon sounds awesome to me. Just load up your favorite tunes and hit the road...

You'll do fine...betcha if you start a Stad's Hbt roadtrip thread, you will find some members looking to meet up on the way.

I have only been out of California twice, and neither were via car. I've been to Hawaii 3 years ago, and Mexico last summer, I am very out of my element here.. Also I would feel weird inconveniencing people.

Drive to Vegas, head on over to the Bunny Ranch, and get some strange!

Hmmm....This menu item looks like a good cure for a broken heart.

the rest of the menu is here http://www.bunnyranch.com/main.php

:D

Though Kirby Kisses, looks like she has some strange in her...

Leave the country - head to Venezuela/Costa Rica/You name it.

Not only is the weather & landscape beautiful, but the women aren't hard to look at either.

You're talking about homebrewers here, son...any excuse to meet another HBT'er for a beer and we jump on it...it ain't an inconvenience to hook up with a fellow knight of the malted barley.

Haha, Bunny Ranch is a no go, DEFINITELY not my style. I don't feel like I would feel right paying for it. Secondly, I've only been to a strip club once, and I felt bad the whole time that these girls my age were subjecting themselves to that kind of work..

Don't get me wrong, I have a filthy mind, I'm not stuck up or anything like that, but paying for sex? Never had to do it in the past, and won't start now. I think I'll start a road trip thread. Also... Gas in my town is about $2.25/gallon. I get a little of 30 MPG so that's about $0.08 a mile. I can go pretty far. Time will be my only enemy.

I said I wanted to keep it around $500, is it possible to leave the country for less than that? I am NOT driving to South America. There's a good chance I'll never been seen again, haha.

I was only kidding about the bunny ranch..seriously plan your route, look at camping, look at any brewpubs and hook up with some members along the way. You would be surprised how much fun you'll have. Anytime anyone from on here says they are coming to michigan, we start a thread and hook up. It has been awesome fun!!

Shecky was in for the final 4 and I almost died on the way home...but it was still awesome.

Aww, that's cute. You dated a girl for 3.5 years and you honestly believe that you didn't have to pay for sex.

Come 'ere you little rascal, let me ruffle your hair. :D

It is was me in that situation and I lived in Hollister I could head SW to Big Sur with a sleeping bag, tent a cooler full of meat and other food and another cooler for beer. I have camped in the mountains of Big Sur with no one within a gun shots sound, truly peaceful.

If you are looking for inspiration of how nice it is, here you go, these are pictures I have taken in Big Sur.

The most important thing is to have a good time and celebrate YOUR life.

Spend $100 on porn and lock the bedroom door. ;) This way you keep occupied and save $400 that you can put toward the house. :cross:

go find a hippie chick, one that is hot, does not smell too bad, and is not too hairy and take her camping.

I didn't catch the part about keeping it under $500...... you can probably do the flight for that - but not much else. I've done 2 weeks for about $1500 total, but I'm cheap. Someone else mentioned cruises - and I've seen some fire sale prices for all-inclusive cruises.

Ditto on the paying for sex - you pay, one way or another, you always pay. I got an ex pissed off once when I told her that the $9000 it cost me to get rid of her came down to pennies per pounce.

That is what I am suggesting as well!! Plus you could always find a lively bunch that is out camping and hang out. Happened to a group I was with out in the middle of nowhere Utah: Henry Mountains.

You will be surprised how friendly people can be out camping.

Money savers:

Lunch meat, Spam (woot!), vienna sausages (woot) crackers cheese, ...

Man now I want to go camping soon. looking at map of Texas Panhandle : )

BTW, beautiful pictures!!!

Haha, yeah... I guess you're right..
Bird's talking about one of our member's new brew pub, not another whorehouse. :D

Naked City Taphouse

thanks for clearing that up, I imagined some sort of nudist colony (which from what I have seen, most have VERY low standards of admission).

Yep, camping is free if you know where you are going. Certain beaches can be camped on for free, but definitely in the forest. If you take the Nacimiento Ferguson RD (Forest Route 22501) which is about half way between Monterey and Cambria or Hearst Castle if you will you will go from Sea level to about 5000 ft in a few miles and can camp anywhere you think is a good spot.

Do you know the rules about open fires and whatnot? Or is it so desolate that it won't matter?

Head north to the great beer states up there. I KNOW there are some HBT members up that way! And go camping! I love that! Grab some grilling foods (dogs, steaks, whatever) and start driving.

Don't worry about what people think about you. Everyone is a stranger, and if you are nice to them, they will be nice to you*. Before you know it you will having a good time and will hardly ever think about what's her name...

*Rules do not apply in NY city, and some parts of Los Angeles.
