dry hopping

I'm working on a hop head read-ish clone right now. its getting two rounds of dry hops. question is can i just dry hop in primary once yeast has flocculated and final gravity is achieved, or should i take it off of the cake, to a secondary, to dry hop. thanks

note: i've always gone to secondary to dry hop, but I'm not too sure why... I'm wondering if it's pointless...
 
I've had great success dry-hopping after a longer primary, 4 weeks or so, for about 5 days, dropping hop pellets straight into the primary.
