To make a corny keg portable would it work to just put it into a 10 gallon cooler (like are used for mashing) with some ice, and then hang the CO2 off the side?

That's been done very successfully. Lots of "portable kegerators" on here.

When I get a 3 gallon corny, I'll get a separate cooler and make a dedicated setup, so I'm not using my mash tun.

I've done it several times. The keg is taller than the cooler, so I just fill with as much ice as possible then roll a towel and stuff it in the top of the cooler around the keg.

Awesome. Just saying, it pays to ask around for things sometimes. I mentioned to a guy that I've been looking for a 10gal cooler, and he's just going to give me the one sitting in his garage he doesn't use any more. So, I was thinking not only about a MLT but also a portable keg cooler.
