How cold is too cold?

First time for a Lager. Also first time using Wyeast smack pack. It's strain 2206 and temp on glass carboy fermenter is 56f. This is a 5 gal extract batch.
 
Depends on how much yeast you pitched. For a properly pitched lager, I have fermented down into the 40s. If you did not make a large enough starter, you are better off pitching warmer and waiting for the fermentation to start before lowering the temperature.
 
LKABrewer I didn't make a starter, but did pitch when it was warmer 68f it cooled down overnight.
