We need to go back in time for 80 years to explore the origin of this unusual name. About 1910 Mr. THEOPHILE VOSSEN ran an establishment called "LA COUR ROYALE". Amongst his many customers were a lot of employees working at the National Bank of Belgium. Those employees passed their time in the pub playing a dives game called "421". Before returning to the office , the employees played a quick last game and the one who lost was called the: "MORT SUBITE" or the sudden death.

Very soon this name became well known and when THEOPHILE VOSSEN moved to this actual address in 1928 he decided to call his pub: "AT THE MORT SUBITE". The same name as this own beers.

His sons and grandsons René and Jean-Pierre VOSSEN continued the tradition for more than 36 years.

Today, the fourth generation of the VOSSEN family Olivier and Bernard, continuous to serve you these delicious Gueuze beers in the same establishment which also retains the original 1928 decor.

This is a great place... Most of the crowd was older locals. Made Brenda and I feel like youngsters.

Knowing a little french and a lot of beer-language, that picture almost makes me feel like I could go there and speak the language! LOL

Just about everyone speaks English. The Flemish and Walloons really don't like each other... If you speak French to a Flem... well they'd just prefer you speak English.

I just love the taps with the glass rinser on the bottom (the cross apparatus). They give your glass a rinse before pouring. That'd be a great feature in any bar.

Wow, great pics. Thanks for taking the time to post them, it looks like you're enjoying your trip!

I think it is unfortuante that it is "divided" and they don't seem to get along with eachother. I had a friend from the Wallon region. I met someone from the Flemish area and wanted to introduce them. When he asked me which region my friend is from, I responded "from Wallon" and he said "I can tell I'm not going to like him."

When we were in Brugge, the taxi driver asked us where we had just come from and we said "Brussels". She responded "We call people from Brussells, chicken heads".

This was my favorite... between here and La Morte Subite. Gives you a real feel for living here. Delirium is a little over the top. La becasse and La Mort Subite are where I would hang if I lived here, much warmer and more welcoming.
Bar is in the La Bourse Area:

Two Quickies
Au Bon Vieux Temps
L'Imaige De Nostre Dame

Not exceptional selections but very cozy and romantic (in a bar kind of way).

This one's right outside the Mannekin Pis. What a way to end a day. Streets were quieter now and little to no tourists.

It has a significant number of beers.

Cantillion Gueuze & Orval
Note that the Cantillon is served in the proper way as this should be stored in this angled fashion:

That's how we did Brussels in a day. The plan was to spend 2 days or more.
Hotel rates and availabilty go way up over the week and Monday and Tuesday are particularly bad. Brussels has a vibrant business and political environment which explains this problem.

Regrets. Not being able to tour Cantillon or Orval.
There were aldo two beer cuisine restaurants that were closed (Restobiers and Spinnokopke) that we'd like to have tried.

Also missed out on Bier Circus.

That's why we'll have to go back.

Some other notes:
Food and Bars - They don't go togeher like you would think. You are not going to find a burger, chicken sandwich or nachos to go with these fine beers. You will be served a small plate of cheese or sausages or nuts at no or low cost. Thay might have Lasagne or an open faced sandwich (as above). Or they may have some fru fru salad for $14 euro. Plan accordingly. You will often be drinking beers in the * to 12% range.

Het roughly equates to "The" and is often abbreviated 't

WTF.....Mannekin Pis is naked? Must have been too late in the day to be in one of them saucy outfits they put on him.

Au Bon Vieux Temps & La Becasse well done olllllo!;)
Bummer that ‘t Spinnekopke wasn't open.:( I think you would have liked that place.

hey olllllo, just bought our tickets for a trip in may, thanks for this post (and the others) it will be very helpful when we get there...

we'll be spending half our time in brussels (about 4 days) and looking for someplace to spend the rest... anyone have any experiences outside the larger cities? maybe recommend a decent countryside-type place or region

I know i have been in Germany too long, at fist i was like wait that bar is in Bruxelles, then it clicked, Bruxelles=Brussels, I have a work location in Ath Belgium, all the singes i follow are head to Bruxelles most of the way. Looks liek a great photo log of that trip, cant wait for Brujes, antwerp, and ghent.... why not rotterdamn/amserdamn they are close by, only a few hours by car and some great bars in both. But if you have the time there are some great local beers in Mons, and a great city center/walkplatz that has a great stake house, itialian, and decent pizza(sorta american style) and 4 great bars around the walkplatz. :D and Mons is only an hour from Bruxelles it would make a great day trip.

Subscribing. Any updates on what all to do there? I am assuming very little has changed since then on the beer scene. I plan on stopping in Brussels around the end of June. Has anyone done any of the beer tours? Cantillon is an absolute must, but not sure what other breweries to hit up.

I have around a week I planned on spending between brussels and amsterdam, but haven't finalized any plans. Any other recommendations around that area? Still open on my itinerary. Will plan on bringing a few bottles home. Cantillon and westvleteren are 2 of the main ones to bring home, but have no clue after that.
