Im on like my 4th brew, never used a secondary. so i bought another bucket from AHS....... the thing is i cannot figure out how to close it (sad, i know.)
it has like a tear off side..

If you mean the lid...rip the "tear off" portion completely off of it. It should seal a little easier after that.

set it on and then pop it down hard in 4 or 5 places. its even more fun taking it off. especially filled with beer.

If it's a new unused lid that was just slapped into place the you need to cut the sides where the elongated holes are.

To make things a little easier, look at a inductrial chem supply store for a bucket opener. The run about $3-6, and they make childs play of a 5 gal lid.
