I wanted to start brewing again. I have a kit. the dry malt is like a rock. And the yeast was in a pouch...I broke the nutrient pack in it last night not sure what is going on in there. It was supposed to be in the refrig - but its been in my closet since 2005.

I know yeast kind of just go into suspended animation if food is nill.

Question is can I use the dry malt and yeast? I would have to soak the dry malt for a while before I use it.

Many thanks,

Ron

I'd say the yeast are dead and although the DME might be usable, I'd only use it in making yeast starters. If it was pre-hopped, the bittering compounds are basically gone.

Time to head to the LHBS.

Yeah, I try to brew with ingredients within a presidential term or so. Sorry, but those ingredients sound unlikely to make good beer for you, if they make beer at all.
