ok... not sure what we are doing wrong, if it is even us... But recently our gravs have been coming out low... i mean a point or two... LOW...

Just did the Raging ***** clone again... something like 34lbs grain total for a 10 gal batch... it came out at 1.060... almost two points low... Wiw did another batch od a similar grain bill same day and I added 2lbs of DME to the boil and the grav was 1.070... still low compared to what it was suppose to be and the DME helped... Here is what we are doing

mashing those two brews at 150 with calibrated therms... so we are close
mashing out and raising bed to 170 ish... Mashing for about an hour
we accumluate about 14 gals, then boil... we get about 11-12 gal left, etc.... everything seems right... what else am I missing... Could it be the grain? US... The economy? Should I not have sex the night before.... WHAT??

Thanx for any advice you can offer

A point or two is nothing... Could simply be hydrometer deviation or temperature correction.

nothing? They should be coming out at 1.079 and I am getting 1.058 or 1.060.... that seems like a lot to me...

Thats not a "point or two." Thats 10-20 points. Which I agree is substantial. Have you changed how you crush your grains? Also, post your entire recipe, it may help us narrow in.

oops... yeah... sorry.. i meant 20 points.... but you get the idea. :)
The LHBS crushes, so I should ask if they changed anything up...

For this recipe, I get an OG of 1.057 (10 gallon batch). A 5 Gallon batch would be well in excess of 1.100, so I'm assuming this is a 5 gallon batch. I haven't checked it against Beersmith, I just quickly pounded it into Beercalculus. Also, I assumed Thomas Fawcett for the MO.

yup... the beer should be around 8.5%, but we added some grains for our efficiency... I will check with the LHBS to see if they changed the crusher

I thought this thread was about carboys being heavy. Oh well. Good advice above.

Wait, so you agree the gravity should come out to 1.057, but you're saying in the same breath that is 20pts. lower than you expected? Then you mentioned adding grain to bump efficiency...well, how much grain?

I'm lost here.

no... re read it... he said it was a 10 gal recipe, but it was a 5 gal... so it should not have come out 1.057... and we added about 3-4 lbs extra...
