Last night I had a growler of IPA from a somewhat local brewery that had a very pronounced grapefruit taste. It was an awesome balance between high hops and malty base. I would say that it was somewhat similar to Rogue's Yellow Snow, but with more grapefruit taste.

Can anyone identify the hop for me? I am thinking either chinook or amarillo.

thanks

My guess would be amarillo, or cascades. I don't know how common amarillo is in commercial breweries, but that is definitely the first thing that came to my mind.

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking amarillo is the high grapefruit hop. Now, I just have to find a great amarillo ipa recipe. Any suggestions?

An amarillo and simcoe ipa, heavy on the simcoe is usually really grapefruity.

Amarillo, Simcoe, Centennial, Cascade, Colombus. All of these have a grapefruit citrus thing to them IMHO. :mug:

Thanks for everyone's help. Here is a potential recipe. This is made with all items that I currently have on hand. Do you think it will give me the grapefruit flavor and aroma that I am looking for? Also, I am looking for an orange hue, so that is why the Crystal 40 is in there.

kdsarch, you wouldn't happen to be referring to Diamond Knot's IPA would you? That is a big glass of grapefruity awesomeness.

I found out that it was by Captain Lawrence Brewing. Their Captains reserve, which i actually an Imperial IPA. Their website: Captain Lawrence Brewing Company

When I started the post, I didnt know which brewery made the beer. Now I see that they list the hops as Columbus, Cascade, and Chinook. They list the ibu's as 80, and the plato at 20.

I have tweaked my recipe as follows to account for what I have on hand. I have a lot of Maris Otter that I would like to use up. Also, I am trying to keep the alcohol at 7%, and have a reddish color, so that is why I am not trying to get 20 plato and 80 ibu's.

I am planning on brewing this up this weekend. Let me know if anyone has ideas to change recipe ingredients.

I accidentally made a very dry grapefruit beer. The grapefruit flavor is so strong that is all that I taste.
The hops I used are as as follows:
Bittering, Centennial
Flavoring/Aroma, Cascade

Amarillo is one of my favorite hops, but I wouldn't waste it on a 60 min addition. I'd go with something like Warrior or Summit to get my biiterring and keep the Amarillo for another day!
