My wife and I are becoming as self sufficent as we can. We are buying land, I am starting a small farm, we grow our own food, building a root cellar, try and make everything we can because 1) we feel our, ahem... "free market" system has turned into a morally deplorable system and we want to be independent from it as much as possible, and 2) we don't know how much longer it will be around anyway. I was just wondering how many other homebrewers are thinking that tasty brew will make an excellent means of exchange when TSHTF, and brew there own to get away from the system of economic slavery we are currently under. Alcohol consumption goes up during times of civil unrest.

im thinking we should be stocking up on guns and ammo and body armor, not farmland. we should be stopping the destruction of out nation, not running from the wake.

1) Admirable proposition - many complain about our society, few do anything to change or remove themselves from it
2) Don't forget to stock up on tinfoil for your hats!

If you look at the zombiepocalypse threads you will see that when the crash happens many of us are going to declare ourselves "King of the Sacred Barley Water" and trade our beers for nubile slave girls....so that we can repopulate the planet.

I mean there is a great precident for this for brewers providing a much needed food and water replacement.....Partigyle brewing provided for small table beers for the kiddies to drink when the water was bad....

That's why we have started the GAP thread to explore non-traditional beer making with common grocery items. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f12/ga...r-experiment-69313/?highlight=Grocery+Produce

I even designed my label for the "snake oil".......er I mean beer...

I figure I'll have my kingdom pretty well covered. :D

I find it ironic that you choose to stock up on tools of destruction to save our nation from being destroyed.

I don't know if I'd take it to that extreme, but there is nothing wrong with learning some self sufficiency. It will pay off even during times of natural disaster.

If for some reason things go to ****, all HBT members are welcome to join my brewing commune. We'll be somewhere in northern Idaho or northwestern Montana most likely. Bring your brewing equipment.

I like the idea of bringing back bartering as a more viable means of exchange, especially in times of financial hardship. Even now, I try to work on a barter system whenever I can. Obviously I need some currency for living expenses, but when I do computer work on the side I'll just trade my services for whatever the other person can provide. Chiropractic work, welding services, auto maintenance, peaches, tomato plants, whatever. When you think about it, both parties are getting to cut out at least 3 layers of government involvement. In addition, it takes less effort for both parties to fulfill their end of the deal when they are professionals at providing those services. Currency is great for many things, but as government starts taking a bigger slice each time it hits an account it quickly saps value from that medium. I know that even bartering is taxable, but how can they tax it if they don't know what it's worth and it's never written down?

Wow, I shoulda guessed the homebrewing DIY attitude on this forum would bring such quick replies! The farm land is something we would do no matter what. I have been woking on small sustainable veg/fruit farms for the last 4 seasons and know it is my calling. The firearms and ammo, well, I am non-violent so I may regret that moral stand someday but it is were I stand today. We are very into fostering the local economy and even local government. My thinking has been when things get so big that you can't show up on your elected officals front yard to chew him out then the government is too big!
On a side note... this forum rocks! I have learned alot since joining up! Thanks guys!

i find it ironic that people are willing to roll over and give up to save themselves. it seems that some people forget about the fruits and toils of conflict in history. you must remember that this country was created on the basis of fighting for what you believe and not giving yourself without return. Trust me when i say, the boys in uniform are coming armed. it would be foolish to make an unarmed stand.

That's quite a varied resume!! You are truly a renaissance dood!!!

You should open up a combination Chiropractic clinic and garage...Getting my back adjusted while I'm getting my tires rotated sounds like a piece of heaven on earth. :mug:

and by the way, i would actually prefer tending my own land and living off of it, i just simply believe that we shouldnt willingly hand over the last 233 years of our existence to socialism.

brewmasterpodunkarizona: It would be hard to argue against your point. Freedom isn't free as they say. I think that the world ecomony is being crashed on purpose, just as I believe the "patriot movement" or "truth seekers" or "freedom fighters" are being fed information to CAUSE an uprising. The only way americans will go along willingly with the overall plan is when the old way has been completly destroyed. They want a rebellion.

LOL, no I meant I would trade my stuff for THOSE services...I don't do all those things! My things are computer work and brewing.

Who are "they"? Why do "they" want a rebellion?

Keep in mind that just owning guns doesn't mean you're a violent person. Sometimes just having a gun in plain sight helps you keep others from being violent too! :D Owning a gun doesn't mean you have to use it. Like they say, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it...

I'll just leave this here...

Oh now I know this is load of crap. Like all you are waiting for is a Zombiepocalypse to justify nubile slavery. Tell the truth Revvy!

You are just waiting for The Supreme Court to drop that blanket restraining order.

Oh ;) and :p

i dont believe they want a rebellion, i think they are just stupid and think americans wont stop them because americans have done nothing to stop socialism in this country as it has progressed for the last 80 years. i think youre right about americans waiting for complete destruction of our system before they stand up because by nature, we believe in diplomacy before violence. but a cou is coming, have no doubt.

TwoHeadsBrewing: You are right on with not equating having a gun with shooting someone with it.

Parker36: The powers that be. The people behind our march to becoming a fascist state. You take a capitalist economy, crash it, people beg for socialism, which becomes fascism. Who are the powers that be? Depends on your world view.

meh... I would much rather live in a socialist or communist society than get shot at defending this one.

I am not that patriotic, I only live here because i am too lazy to move.

so i think we mutilated the poor guys original post with a melting pot of world views, well that was fun. i think ill go clean my guns now. :off::D

If the powers that be have enough power to destroy the global economy and incite a rebellion, why would they risk losing all that power for a tiny bit more? Conspiracy theories can be fun, but they're not a game.

parker36, im not a conspiracy theorist, i dont believe that bit at all. like i said, i think theyre just stupid and arrogant and think we wont do anything to stop them. the brits found out that was the wrong theory, now the local libs have to learn.

and secondly, when you say "a little bit more", youre talking about the take over of the worlds only super-power and the largest economy in the world, um wheres the little bit part???

In your little theory "they" would have to already control both the economy (to make it crash) and country (both organize the people to rebel, and then later to change the laws to their liking) in order to incite the changes that you propose. But if you believe this is the way things are/will be, I'm not going to try to argue with you.

I don't know if they will be able to pull of the destruction of the world economy or not. It is not about a tiny bit more power. It is about total power. A new world order, a one government system. As to exactly why they would want this, well, once again it really depeds on your world view. I spent waaay to much time looking into all of this stuff and for me it didn't all click together until I put it in a biblical perspective. The bible says this stuff is going to happen to usher in a anti-christ.

+1. The elite need the working classes to work...so they don't have to. If they let this all collapse, they would lose a significant portion of their wealth. Why would they want that to happen? They will push to gain as much power as possible, without destroying the system.

And on a similar note, the only role government serves for most of the wealthy is defense from the poor. Without that defense, the poor would simply take what the wealthy have. If there are too many poor, they will overwhelm the defenses of the rich and take what they want.

lol, so you're one of them?

Just an observation:

But I simply cannot take any posting so wrought with spelling, grammatical and mechanical errors as to make my eyes cross as anything more than meaningless nonsensical drivel.

If that makes me an enemy on HBT, so be it.

Jason

Great idea!
Not sure I'll be able to make enough barley (barely?) to make beer on our city lot but I should be able to sustain myself in beer if I spent a bunch of time, $$ and effort.
