My kit (a 15 liters wort in a sealed plastic bag for which you normally just add water and yeast) came with a pouch of potassium bicarbonate? I am supposed to add this before the yeast.

Why?

Is it necessary ?

It is necessary. The kits are acidic to help preserve shelf life. The potassium bicarbonate neutralizes the acid.

Is this a brew house kit? If so, they are pretty good. I just brewed the red ale.

Add the ph neutralizer into your primary before you pour your wort in. Then add water, aerate, then pitch your yeast.

Ok then. Yes, it's a Brewhouse one. It's call Pale wheat ale, seasonal release.
