A while ago there was a thread about naming some IPAs or somesuch. In that thread, the idea of Twelve Hopostles came up. I think this is an awesome idea and am planning to brew the twelve hopostles in 2010.

I am going to brew them all with the same malt bill, yeast, mash schedule, and fermentation schedule (might look similar to Yooper's IPA ;)). They will all be continuously hopped and dry hopped. The only difference will be the hop varietal used in the beers.

Each beer will be named after one of the original twelve apostles and I will try to come up with some kind of correlation between the apostle and the hop used. I have been nurturing this idea for a while and finally have the first label ready to show along with the first recipe.

I will save the first couple posts in this thread to update my recipes and labels.

I hope you will have some advice and comments for me. I also think it would be really cool if a couple of us got on board with this and could trade 12-packs of our twelve hopostles!!!

:mug:

I give you, the Hopostles:
1. Andrew
2. Bartholomew
3. James the Greater
4. James the Lesser
5. John
6. Judas
7. Jude
8. Matthew
9. Philip
10. Simon Peter
11. Simon Zealot
12. Thomas

I first give you... Saint Andrew.

Yeah, cool label.

I'm not sure what connections you can come up with. "Sons of Thunder" (John and James the Greater) get Zeus hops?

This would be a fun experiment to see what each hop does...but how about making a beer at the end that contains all 12? ;)

THAT, I would brew.

Neat idea. Stupid Church nit to pick on a label to be theologically accurate. I know.. I know.. :p

The nimbus/halo wouldn't be behind Judas Iscariot's head because he's not a saint or venerated by The Church.

Good tip... why didn't I think of that. And why did this image of Judas have a halo int he first place?! Weird. Soon to be updated.

You could make it black. That is in some iconography from the middle ages...... Others argue that the halo means power and that Judas did have, be it for good or evil. Or the "Judas" is reference to Jude aka Judas Not Iscariot aka Judas the Zealot

I should just keep my yap shut sometimes. :(

12 - 4 gallon batches... that's quite an undertaking. I think you're going to need some help in drinking all of those. ;)

I agree that you should make a 13th combination of all of the hops. Maybe call it Rufus (for those of you not in the know, that's a reference to the movie Dogma). Or perhaps Matthias, the ACTUAL 13th apostle to replace Judas. Jesus is kind of an important dude too, maybe he could be the icon of the 13th beer.

And, not to start a heated debate based on another recent thread, maybe the 13th beer could be a direct blend of all the other 12.

+1 on jesus bein the 13th beer and all the hops

man, that is a stellar idea. my wife and i were kicking around names for a brewery and 'st. andrew's' came up, the st. andrew's ipa looks tasty! hell, they all do.

Is Weyermann Cara Amber the same as Amber malt? Or should I go with Crisp Amber. These are the only 2 I have found. Thanks

No, they're not the same. Crisp's Amber malt would be a British Amber malt. Weyermann's is a caramel malt, so it has no diastatic power.

This is a great idea and really cool labels. Is it me, or does philip have too many fingers on his right hand?

Oh, Man...If only I had the time and funds to join you in making each of these beers. I definitely would've been in to swap 12 packs.

To update, I have not brewed any of these. I don't have a functioning brewery currently. However, one of my friends (HBT member sourmash) brewed St. Jude.

Note that the label design makes it very easy for you to substitute your brewery logo.

how did I miss this before, what a great idea

and yes, Jesus should be a mixture of all the hops...don't really know who that would turn out but I am very curious about it!

Hey Boerderij, were these recipes formulated using whole or pellet hops? I'm thinking about brewing Saint Bartholomew for my birthday next month!

Not sure why I didn't do this before, but the Beersmith files are now uploaded to the first posts.

You should add your desired yeast and some clarifying agent (I use whirlfloc).
