I used a heat stick in my last brew, and noticed that the heating element was covered in gunk after I took it out. It looked like rust, but I am guessing it's hot break and hop debris. I was able to wipe it pretty easily using some bar keeper's friend. Is that normal?

Yup, I just clean mine off (eKeggle) with PBW solution and toilet brush. The brush of course is kept away from the other "brew" pot...

I think it's normal. Here's what mine look like after a session. Crud easily comes off with a sponge and water.
