NOTE: This thread will contain only the general guidelines and recipe for the 999 Barleywine Swap. This will hopefully give members a "clean" source for important information. We will keep the running discussion thread going here.

Once the Pastor has come up with a recipe I will post it here as well as the discussion thread.

If the community wishes I will draft an American Barleywine recipe. I would aim for a recipe that once again reflects the nines...
Thank you BrewPastor.

It's official then.
This will be a Barleywine Brew & Swap.

If nobody objects, I will organize.

BrewPastor will craft a default recipe. Variations are fine but should adhere to the spirit of the 999.
The intent is to brew sometime in September (September 1st is Labor Day...FYI) so that the Barleywine is one year old by 9-9-09. As far as when we ship, we have plenty of time to decide those details. My initial thought is that the brewer will hold on to their own beer for at least 6 months to age it to their specifications....bottle and ship for further aging. This is just a thought though.

Standard shipping protocol applies:
You'll ship to three randomly assigned people
You'll receive from three randomly assigned people
You'll ship a minimum of 44 ounces. (Two 22 ouncers, four 12 ouncers or any combination thereof).
As with the RIS swap, at least two of the bottles (regardless of size) should be the 999-Barleywine. You are welcome to also include other creations that the recipient might enjoy sooner. No "crap" beer that you just need to get rid of please.
In the end, we should all end up with at least 6 bottles of Barleywine and likely some additional varieties.

Please consider carefully:
This is a one-year commitment to a beer swap.
If you're dabbling in brewing and are not 100% convinced that you will see this through, please do not agree to participate.
Please agree only if you are relatively sober at the time...then you can get as druck as you like...
If you've stiffed anyone in a prior swap, you need not apply.
If you've been stiffed in a prior swap, PM me with info and I'll filter the list accordingly

Participation (as always) is limited to paying members...so pony up and don't miss out.

And finally...

PM me if you are definitely in for this swap.

By my best count we're at 35 confirmed participants.

  • If you're name does not appear below and you think it should, it is likely that you are not yet a paid member. Get paid up and PM me.
  • If your name does appear below and you do not want to participate, PM me and I'll trim the list.

This is by no means a final list. A truly final list for the swap will not be assembled until well after the brew date...most likely sometime in early 2009. This will allow the list to "clean up" a bit as we have late comers and some brewers who have to withdraw for various reasons.

If the list below is any indication, I'd say we're off to a good start. Will keggles be on the boil on Labor Day Monday?

Note that this "Occasion" swap is not a replacement for the quarterly open swaps or any other swaps that may be in the works.

I'll update the list periodically.

Some folks have inquired about scaling this to a 3 gallon batch to fit their equipment.

I plugged everything into Beersmith. I had to sub out the pale chocolate with Crystal 120 because even trace amounts of the chocolate (350 SRM) was making the beer too dark.
I also had to make some adjustments to compensate for the differences between BeerTools Pro and BeerSmith when it came to IBU’s.

Everything else should be pretty spot on to the Pastor’s original recipe.

Batch Size: 3.50 gal
Boil Size: 5.37 gal
Estimated OG: 1.119 SG
Estimated Color: 19.8 SRM
Estimated IBU: 99. IBU
Brewhouse Efficiency: 61.0 %
Boil Time: 90 Minutes

Ingredients:
------------
Amount
14.00 lb Pale Malt, Maris Otter (3.0 SRM)
1.25 lb Munich Malt (9.0 SRM)
0.50 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 80L (80.0 SRM)
0.25 lb Special B Malt (180.0 SRM)
0.10 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt -120L (120.0 SRM)
1.00 lb Sugar, Table (Sucrose) (1.0 SRM)

1.25 oz Magnum [14.50%] (90 min)
0.50 oz Centennial [9.50%] (25 min)
0.50 oz Centennial [9.50%] (10 min)
0.50 oz Cascade [7.80%] (10 min)

Brew Tracking as of 10/12

Once you've completed your brew session, PM me so I can track the progress of all the participants.

Here's what I have so far. If I've missed your session, let me know.

I've removed individuals who have been absent from HBT for four weeks or more.
