Ok, so I was singing my daughter to sleep last night, singing her some old Tom Waits songs, and I got to thinking...

What are people's favorite drinking songs? Either songs directly about drinking, or songs that they like to listen to when they've had a few.

She went out under my piss-poor rendition of Waits' "Bad Liver and a Broken Heart," which I would have to consider to be, at least for me, the epitome of a pure, broken down, alone-in-a-bar-at-closing-time pathos. Pretty much all old Tom Waits falls into this, I suppose. I'm wondering what else people either really want to listen to when they've had a few, or what songs just bring out those same sentiments.

That song they sing in Jaws when they're inside the boat drinking and sharing scar stories when Jaws starts to break in.

Show me the way to go home. I'm tired and I want to go bed. I had a little drink about an hour ago and it got right to my head....

"I Like Beer" by Tom T. Hall Greatest beer-drinking song ever? I think so!

Wild Rover (No Nay Never)

I've been a wild rover for many a year
And I spent all my money on whiskey and beer,
And now I'm returning with gold in great store
And I never will play the wild rover no more.

cho: And it's no, nay, never,
No nay never no more,
Will I play the wild rover
No never no more.

I went to an ale-house I used to frequent
And I told the landlady my money was spent.
I asked her for credit, she answered me "nay
Such a custom as yours I could have any day."

cho:

I took from my pocket ten sovereigns bright
And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight.
She said "I have whiskey and wines of the best
And the words that I spoke sure were only in jest."

cho:

I'll go home to my parents, confess what I've done
And I'll ask them to pardon their prodigal son.
And if they caress (forgive) me as ofttimes before
Sure I never will play the wild rover no more.

cho:

ETA: This uh... proves my point

Jerry Jeff Walker...yea! "Pissin in the Wind..."

But you meant "You never even called me by my name" by David Allen Coe right? Written by Steve Goodman? aka: The perfect country and western song?

Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash

It's not about drinkin', but it still mentions prison, mama, and trains. Last weekend one of my buds had his wedding reception at the brewpub he brews at. He broke out a 3 year old RIS so we were good & trashed by the time that song came on the jukebox.

Isn't is amazing how much better you can sing when you're drunk?:rockin:

My second vote - Five Shots of Whiskey by Hank Williams III

This one IS about drinkin', as are pretty much all of Hank III's songs. That man sure likes his whiskey.

On a side note, I'm in the middle of brewing and decided to go through some old CD's.

I just put in Me So Horney by 2 Live Crew

For some reason, my wife always gets pissed when I play that.

Ha! My wife (g/f at the time, still SWMBO) made me throw away all my old 2Live Crew. "You're never going to listen to that again, ARE YOU?!"

It's so bad, it'd not pornographic in that Cheesefood way, it's pornographic in that 12-year-old-who-once-got-into-his-brother's-stash kind of way. So absurdly amateurish.

"Boys on the Docks" by the Murphys comes to mind for me. I grew up on "Do or Die" so its way up there, probably tied for best Murphy's album with "Sing Loud, Sing Proud". Plus we used to drink to it in college...a lot.

Agree with you about The Pogues, Gaelone...

One song I always like to listen to while drinking is Home for a Rest, by Spirit of the West.

If you haven't heard it, it's a great song about the band pub-crawling through England and needing to go home for a rest (from all the drinking.):mug:

the clerk looked, he turned up, he looked he stopped.
he said "son, I'm not gonna call the cops,

but I am gonna have to keep this card"-
.......the guys both took it pretty haard

Todd Snider Rulez!!

The other day I was driving along with my daughter in the back and flipping through the channels. I came to a polka show, and wouldn't you know it, In Heaven There Is No Beer by Frankie Yankovic came on. My daughter (who is 2) started grooving in her car seat and yelling "Dance Daddy, Dance".

Now THAT's a drinking song.

She also sings along to Master of Puppets by Metallica. That kid has good taste in music.

My 18-month old starts headbanging - isn't it awesome? She's more into punk than metal, but ANYTHING with any kind of groove she gets into. Hell, she just hears some random noise somewhere and starts dancing to it.

Not really punk OR metal, butr this is her getting down to The Getaway People a few months back...

As far as kids and music go, my 4yo daughter sings along to The Who - Live at Leeds.

For drinking songs: Man I can't believe nobody has mentioned the ultimate bush-party song (aka The Provicial Anthem of Saskatchewan):

Copperhead Road!

"Him'n my uncle tore that engine down..."

Copperhead Road is one of the great songs of all time, IMHO. Hell, anything by Steve Earle pretty much kicks ass. I wasted many a night in my teenage years getting blasted on Busch Lite or Jack Daniels and jamming to that song. (Long before I discovered the joys of good beer). Yes, I was a hooligan.

Heh...tonight I put in Seas of Cheese by Primus. My daughter danced like I've never seen her dance before. She especially liked Tommy the Cat after I told her it was a song about kitties.:rockin:

Any Pogues song...Willie nelson's 'whiskey river' is probably my fav drinking song or song about drinking (wait, what was the question?) I saw Willie play live a few years ago and not only did he open with 'whiskey' but he closed with it and I swear he played it somewhere in the middle of the set too.
