I racked one of my pale ales recently and discovered something weird in the jug I was using for the blowoff.

I used plain water for the blowoff because I was being lazy. It GREW SOMETHING PURPLE.

The beer isn't infected, but whatever is in there is pretty weird. It's slightly viscous and it holds together if you swirl it around.

The hell?

Since the possiblity exists that this is Serratia, and it is a gram-negative bacterium and a human pathogen, I recommend sanitizing your container, and putting a bit of bleach in there next time.

It's always good to use a bit of sanitizer solution in the blow off container (or just use a dry blowoff setup). Bleach works, but if the container is open you'll need to add more bleach every day or two to keep the solution strong enough to keep the nasties at bay.
