I stepped up a vial twice with 1.5l 1.040 starters. Smells weird, yeasty, not awful, but weird and slightly unpleasant. Now there is a pellicle. Normal? I think I'll keep the jar as a pet and see what happens in there, but not to keen on pitching it.

WLP645 is Brettanomyces Claussenii, so it is supposed to have a pellicle. Pellicles are Brett's reaction to being exposed to oxygen.

It's my first time making a brett starter. I know brett + o2 = pellicle, it just didn't take very long to form and I wanted some interweb hand holding. Thanks!

You should uncage your pet and let him play in a carboy. You never know, you might like what he can do!?!

Here's what I ended up brewing:

Riverbend Heritage Malt 11lbs
Flaked Barley 1.5lbs
Special B .75lbs
Carapils .75lbs
Castle debitttered black .75 lbs
Roast Barley .25lbs
Dark Syrup 1lb

Over shot my volume by 1/2 gallon. Was shooting for 1.065, hit 1.060.

Brewed Saturday, pellicle is forming this morning.
