I have a 2.5 gal batch that is coming across very strong on the hops. I am not a fan of a strong hops flavor so I was wondering... could I make another 2.5 gal batch without hops and combine the two? I was thinking about rehydrating the malt extract and just dropping it as wort into the "hoppy" batch to make a 5 gal batch and just let the yeast in the first batch do the work.

Has anyone else done this and does it work?

It has been over two weeks in primary. I was thinking that this might be a brew that I just bottle and forget about for a long time. :)

60 min- .75oz fuggles
15 min- .25oz Saaz

Again, this was a 2.5 gal batch. Thanks for the quick responses!

i would leave it. that saaz should give a nice smooth flavor in the end and depending on your AA%, that doesn't look overly hoppy. what style are you trying to brew?

usually it's best to see it through after only 2 weeks in primary. the hops will definitely mellow out and you wouldn't want to screw with a perfectly good beer.

Here is the recipe- as far as a style- it is a ale.

1lbs of crystal 20 (partial mash per Death Brewer's instructions)
3lbs of DME
.75oz fuggles 60min
.25 oz saaz 15 min
1 tsp of irsh moss

I am still new to brewing and this is my 4th batch to make.

Its definitely within the guidelines for the style - I'd proceed as planned and just let it age. It will be hoppier than BMC, but shouldn't be overwhelming - even for a non-hophead.

technically that's not a partial mash as Crystal 20 has no enzymes for conversion. it only needs to be steeped anyway, tho, so you're still good for that recipe.

from my calculations, that would give you a starting gravity of 1.060 - 1.066 and IBUs would be in the 35-40 range.

you're gold, dude. let this one sit and wait for the end product. that should be a good balance, maybe even a bit light on the hops.

thanks DB- and here I thought I was moving along in my brewing! At least I got the PM technique experience with this.
What would you change to make this recipe a PM then? 2 row and less extract?

yeah, for a 2.5 gallon batch, you could do it all-grain! if you use the same size pots as i do (5 gallons) you can do 6 lbs or more grains...

check it out, here would be your recipe:

Thanks! I knew you would come through for me DB! I will head over to the LHBS on Tuesday for this! Maybe tomorrow if they are open!

yep= I have made only two types of beer and I am trying to nail those down before exploring- I believe this was the advice of someone on the forum (maybe Revey?)- get about 5-10 batches under your belt and do them well.

PM me your info DB and I will send you a botlle of both to compare and get your opinion.
