ok so on the 22nd of this month I fly out to Tyler for a job interview. its with my current company for an Operations Manager position. I'd be attempting to rent out my house here in Az and rent a place in Tyler.

the wife is excited that I'd be making a HUGE jump in my carrier as am I, but what about LHBS I tried to google search but came up short. so anyone in TX familiar with Tyler have any input.

also looking for nice places to live if there is a preferred area over another. 4 bedroom house is a must since we have one 15 month old and another on the way.

also what about transporting home brew during a move I guess I would not want anything fermenting, but kegged beer should be fine I would assume.

feeling are excited, scared, optimistic, nervous and happy to be moving up.

also what good bars, restaurants, pubs should I be checking out?

Jason! Did you get the job? I'm a Tylerite looking for some homebrew buddies to learn from.

We live in the Azalea district (older neighborhood) here in central Tyler and love it. There are houses all over the place of varying sizes. Let me know man.

well odds are pretty good they are going to offer me the position. I'll meet the Branch Manager, and regional manager on Tues the 22nd and Fly back to Az on the 23rd. They will get together with my regional manager and talk about it. if all goes well I'll start training asap. and then move out to Tyler. hopefully they give me notice so i can get my affairs in order here to get my place rented out and find a place to rent in Tyler.

I am super excited.

is there a LHBS to buy product from in Tyler because I couldn't find anything via Google.

Well, I don't think Tyler has much as its relatively small.

My suggestion is to do a weekend trip to Austin. Austin is about 4 hours away from Tyler. Austin Homebrew Supply is one of the best in the country and a perfect place to stock up on supplies. You could hit up some of the breweries in the area and a ton of great bars.

Houston is also close, its a little less than 4 hours away from Tyler. There are a few homebrew supply shops around here. The one that always comes to mind is De Falcos

Of course, Houston has some good breweries too! You could do a weekend trip and check out St.Arnold's and Southern Star. If you go to St.Arnold's, make sure to get there early because people line up quickly and the wait can be a while if you get there late. Southern Star is a bit more laid back and much smaller scale. No Label brewing is the new guy in town and they do tours, but according to their website they aren't doing tours right now. For bars, Petrol Station and Flying Saucer are a must. Petrol Station even does growler fill ups.

Less than 2 hours to Dallas (maybe hour and a half?) - you could get to this LHBS pretty easy:

Adam, thanks, Tyler small?

you should check out where I live now... Chino Valley and work in Prescott.

at least Tyler has Colleges and a Freeway that means its at least big enough for that.

although I do hail From Orange County CA

Jason,

First off, awesome name.

Deafsmith is right, Homebrew HQ is probably your closest LHBS. Everybody there is really helpful. And Tyler to Dallas is a straight shot, decent two hour drive.

Good Luck on the interview,

Jason

yeah I pretty much have the job I think *being very optimistic* here. but yeah I guess its not different than driving 2 hours to Phoenix like i have now. *sigh* oh well at least I'll have more than one grocery store, more than 2 gas stations, and more restaurants to dine at in Tyler ;)

yeah I live in BFE AZ population of 11k vs Tylers 204K population.

All you need to know about Tyler TX is that it produced one of the greatest running backs in history. Ever heard of the Tyler Rose? Mr. Earl Campbell? Only one of the greatest running backs in college and NFL history he is even in the NFL hall of fame. He was also the #1 pick in the 1978 draft to the Houston Oilers. oh ya and i get my homebrew supplies from AHS in Austin TX.

When I lived in Fort Worth, I went to the Winemaker's Shoppe, but I don't know if they're still in business. There's at least four HBS in the DFW area last I heard. I'd suggest going to DFW before making the drive to Austin or Houston. I'm in Houston now and I order from AHS a lot (such great prices and sales!) and when I order standard shipping from AHS I typically get my package within 2 days. I like to think of them as my LHBS. :D

I've been to Prescott (toured a school there) and thought it was a really nice place. Get your fill of non-flat terrain now, as TX (for the most part) has very little! Flat as they come! :D Best of luck on the career advancement!

Barroze, do explain DFW to me being from Arizona I am not familiar with the local lingo.

Of course! Sorry! DFW = Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. It's the code of the airport and is just an easy name for the entire metropolitan area.

Dude. Tyler is not really a small town. It has close to 150k proper and over 1 million people in the area counties etc. It is half way from Dallas and Shreveport (casinos). Great mix of restaraunts etc. Has a nice mix of nightlife. Not like dallas but u can find what u need. It us a dry county and u need to plan a 20-30 minute drive for beer stores. I order everything online from Austin homebrew. Shows up quickly. I also used to live in the azalea district. South Tyler is nice. Do not live north of downtown

I forgot about this. I'm not familiar with the Tyler area, but the DFW area, and many other locations in the Bible Belt, are peppered with Dry areas. I believe it's up to the precinct to determine whether you can or cannot purchase alcohol. It can be a pain if you're in a rush, but should by no means deter the move. Anyways, you do make your own, right? ;)

I lived in Tyler for a while, and at least while I was there (late 90s) Smith county was dry. So you'll have to plan your commercial beer runs for sure if that's still the case. Otherwise, if you're making your own, you should be alright.

whoa... Dry County.... WTF does that mean....you can't buy alcohol in Tyler?

I've lived in Ca and now Az and have never heard of such a thing. can I brew my own beer or will I be breaking the law?

-=Jason=-

Counties in Texas can choose whether to allow the sale of alcohol. The ones that don't allow any alcohol sales are dry. Smith county is one such dry county, meaning you'll have to drive to a neighboring county to get your booze. There are no (legal) liquor stores in Smith county. You can buy a drink in a restaurant, but I think you might have to become a member of their club or something antiquated like that.

This might come in handy if you move there:

holy crap I guess living in Ca has really clouded my understanding on how things work. I see Tyler is surrounded by semi wet counties what a bunch of crap.

-=Jason=-

shoot seems a dry city / town would be a prefect spot to open up a LHBS.

-=Jason=-

Tyler is a cool town but dry like they say. My parents are out there and when I go out to visit I have to make a beer run for them on the way from Dallas. People are brewing out there for sure- meth-. One spot of good news is a brewery is being built there. My dad couldn't tell me the name. If its a BJ's then they won't be brewing on premise. If otherwise you might be able to get grains from them. 1.5 hours east is Richardson Homebrew mart. They ship stuff too. Like the above post - live south of town. I think everything is growing that way, towards lake palestine. If your laid back you will like it. If your a nightlife party dude, stay in AZ. Either way, good luck on your job. I'm sure tyler could use a homebrewer, bigtime!

U can order a drink anywhere. Clubs will ask for I'd to swipe and then u become a "member". U just have to drive a bit to get to store. And yes u can brew beer here

X3 or 4 on Austin Homebrew Supply. Though I would suggest some routine stops in Dallas to shop the LHBS while picking up good beer... you won't find a wide craft selection anywhere near Tyler to my knowledge. Here is a list of bottle shops to get the goodies from. Listed by closest to your area first... There are more but these seem to be the hot ones with the seasonal special releases. Welcome!

- Mr. G's Beverages (Plano)
- Keg's and Barels (Plano)
- Central Market (Plano)
- Lonestar or Sams (Carrollton)
- Halls (Grapevine / Colleyville)

Hello fellow Texans, I hail from the ****hole named Laredo Tx. I'm very excited about beginning my home brew hobby, but have the same problem: I cant find a LHBS. I'm driving up to Austin tomorrow, but thats about 3+ hrs away. I guess San Antonio would be my best bet. Does anyone know of any LHBS's down in south texas?

no I am not party night life guy. I am Family Dad now with one kid and another on the way I can't afford to go out and party anymore. I sold my Project Race Truck because I needed a 4 door suv instead of a gutted 5 point harnessed window netted toy.

but it seems Tyler has a LOT more going for it than were I am currently living.. 11K population Vs 150-200K HUGE DIFFERENCE there.

so I'll just have to build up a nice big pipeline going on and rely on home brew.

so South Tyler huh I'll make sure to let me wife know. we are thinking of using a Realtor to find us a place once I get offered the job and know when I'll be making the move.

-=Jason=-

If you make good money your quality of life will be huge as compared to AZ. I disagree with Apache. Austin is San Fran East. Tyler is what you make of it. You can shoot guns all day long and still drink beer doing it. Texas summers suck. They are hot, sweaty and long. Best you get to brewing your ass off to stay cool. Check out holly tree area. Lots of Doctors, etc down there. I would ditch a realtor just use for sale by owner. There are good deals there, they are, let's just say in need of money. Like all of us. Step out of town towards Canton, ex: brownsboro. Good land to be had. You could build a small barn, no permits, and build your own brewery. Tyler willl be fun if you don't follow the sheep. Think out of the box.

In the North Dallas area there is homebrew headquarters, thats where I get most of my stuff. Also, if you join the North Texas Homebrewers Association, you get 10% off of everything there. www.homebrewhq.com

well I don't wish to drive more than 20-30 minutes to get to work and right now my quality of life is not as sweet as it could be making another 15K more a year. plus I am young at 30 with 5 years with the company I can easily retire from the company and have banked a decent 401K by 60. most managers in this position are in the 40's / 50's. shoot I would be regional manager one day who knows. all I know is Tyler is a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

I still think its crap that its a dry county....

-=Jason=-

Have to say. Tyler is a nice area. I used to visit often camping, it has a nice stae park. I lived in Plano for s long time (currently live in Houston). I loved home brew hq. The people there are great got me into brewing super helpful and friendly. If I would have gone to my lhbs here in houston I most likely would have never started. You will love it here. Texas is great. If you want big city it's not to far off. Best of luck to you. Oh and maybe you will be the one fight of those local bible belters and make your city a WET one some day. It's not that hard just give away a lot a hombrew that will help with the votes!
Gluck!

My wife grew up in Athens, TX just about 30 min down the road from Tyler. Its a nice area. Lots of good people up that direction.

Several towns just here recently changed from Dry to semi-dry and are working on moving away from that mess all together. Luckily there are a TON of places to get what you are looking for if you just head towards one of the lakes. I remember we would go over to Caney City and as soon as you went over the bridge from Malakoff there were about 5 liquor stores. The decent ones were just a bit further down, but they are around.

Best of luck on the job!

*BUMP*

so its official I start working in Tyler April 18th. I need a room for rent on the cheap. I work off the loop 323 east north east.

I will be with out home brew until I can move my house and family out there :( I just hope we can rent out our house asap. either that or we just walk from it and let the bank take it back.

Woohoo! A new neighbor!
BTW, I know it's a dry county and all (not really).

But your work will be oh, about 10 min from my liquor store!
Happy Jack's Too in Winona...

Happy Jack's Too in Winona...

I already have happy jacks "starred" on my google maps on my phone its the closest place to get some "take home" alcohol and beer.

if you know of a cheap room for rent please let me know I really don't like the idea of sleeping in my car. Hotels are to much money and there are a lot of places available but for much more than i am willing to pay.

-=Jason=-

You guys aren't too terribly far from me, either!

Congratulations on the new job!

I just had a phone interview for a job in Charlottesville, VA this week.

Jason, as far as places to rent, I don't have any leads. But I can suggest several places to live: Pretty much anywhere in south Tyler, Bullard, Flint, or Whitehouse. As someone said, do not go to north Tyler. I will also add that the area you will be working can be kinda iffy. Anywhere around the Northeast side is like north Tyler. As you go more to the south near UT Tyler, you might be able to find something. But by far, true south Tyler (close to the vicinity to Broadway) will be your best bet. Bullard, Flint and Whitehouse are great small towns that are suburbs of Tyler. I also know a great realtor. He was Tyler's realtor of the year in I think 2009, for what it's worth.

Your best bet for HB supplies is AHS, with their $7.99 flat rate shipping and free shipping for orders >$100.

It's good to know we have a few homebrewers around here. What company are you with?
