I brewed 5 gal of Pumpkin ale this weekend. I used nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves as my spices along with libby's pure pumpkin...now my question...I used a blowoff tube although i did not need one as it didnt go to nuts in fermentation...After about 24 hours i did notice a very very very strong chemically smell/alcohol smell coming from the blowoff tube. I mean if i stuck my head in the pitcher where it was blowing off it felt like it burn my nosehairs it was so strong...is this normal...and btw it did not smell too pumpkin pie either...? Any ideas or am i expecting something way too soon....

just give it some time. yeast produce all sorts of smells during fermentation, so I wouldn't be too worried about anything at this point.

When the fermentation stops, take a sample and taste it.
