I like this beer too....haven't seen a recipe but have you tried contacting Firestone and asking for help? Some breweries are helpful.

The brewery did get back to me. They said that they couldn't give me the recipe, but that the grains and hops used are listed on their web site. They also said "Don't be afraid to get creative with the hops...... and even throw some in the mashtun." So, after visiting the web site I played around with the grain and hop bills and came up with this:

I also love the Union Jack.

I would guess that the Munich is too high in your recipe.
I am curious if there is a touch of honey malt in the Jack.

Your hops look expensive - but I'm sure there is simcoe, cascade and amarillo in the dry-hop and flavor additions based on taste.

Once I get some fresh 2008 hops I am going to try this recipe - so keep us posted.

Just curious what recipes others would come up with. From the Firestone/Walker web site:

STYLE:
American IPA

* Alcohol By Volume- 7.5%
* Color - 8L (Pale)
* IBU- 72 (High)

MALTS:

* Premium Two-Row (Metcalf & Kendall varieties)
* Munich
* Cara Pils
* Simpson’s Light Crystal

HOPS: (4 lbs/BBL)
o Bittering - Warrior, Simcoe
o Late Kettle - Cascade, Centennial
o Dry Hops - Amarillo, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Simcoe

Did you try making this? Just poured my first pint from a bomber and it is awesome. I get a strong simcoe and chinook aroma, and the malt flavor is exactly what I look for in a piney IPA. Would love to do a version similar...

Not yet. I'm starting small and moving up to this one. Just kegged the B3 version of Blind Pig IPA (with my own twists of course). It's very good, but nothing like UJ. I've only brewed 85 gallons of beer so far (brewing 10 more today) so I'm becoming more comfortable with my recipe formulation. The Munich in the recipe above is way too much though, I'd probably cut it down to 1 - 1.5 lbs. I'd also probably bring the Centennial addition at 0 minutes back up to 15 minutes for more flavor.

So Lucky, how did it turn out? Anyone try this recipe?

Before I read this thread, I took a stab at a recipe using their website & a bottle for tasting. I am planning to brew this soon. My malt bill came out very similar. Key differences are in the hop schedule, which I'm sure would come out great either way.

I also wanted to be sure to capture that lovely heavy/chewy mouthfeel.. it supports the hops so well! So not sure where best to mash ... 156? 158?

Any & all commets are welcome... :)

Can You Brew It just had a Brynildganza. The first episode should post Tuesday I think.. it will contain the complete interview, but not the final recipe. This was Tasty's attempt, and he apparently absolutely nailed it.

Heya,

After listening to the brewing network's broadcast on Firestone Walker beers, I refined my recipe and brewed it last month. My LHBS did not have Simcoe hops, so I subbed Columbus and hoped for the best....

Its been 30 days since brewday, and I tasted it side by side with FW Union Jack today. Very close! Slightly more citrus & carmel than the real thing, but very close and very enjoyable! :mug:

Have you had a chance to taste this yet? I'm thinking about brewing this after listening to the shows. I've never tried it (east coaster) but it sounds like a delicious beer!

Thanks Big Jay!
This is my next batch in Cue after I make my Home-Grown IPA this coming weekend. I'll use your recipe, if you don't mind. :) :cheers:

Finally got a fermenter free, so will be brewing another batch of this on Sunday. :)

If I didn't mention earlier, I ended up mashing at 148-F, per the recommendation on the BN show. The beer was really really tasty!

This time through, I have some homegrown Centennial & Cascade hops to use!

Sorry for the old skool bump, but this beer is so damn good. Just bought it the other day, and I gotta figure out how to brew it.

However, I'm still a noob - and I have a question. You said your boil time was 90 min, 7.2 Gallons, for a 5.5 gallon batch...I'm guessing your boil-off is pretty high?

Also, can you break this down for me?

Single Infusion, Light Body, Batch Sparge
Step Time Name Description Step Temp
60 min Mash In Add 4.73 gal of water at 159.2 F 148.0 F

Are you mashing 4.73 gal, then batch sparging with an additional 2.47 gal to reach a boil volume of 7.2?

Finally, is 90 min necessary here?

Looks great, thanks for taking the time putting it up for us. I'll be brewing this soon.

Cheers,
Meatwad

I use a 9%/hr evaporation rate in Beersmith. It is pretty accurate for me here in Southern California. YMMV...

Step Time Name Description Step Temp
60 min Mash In Add 4.73 gal of water at 159.2 F 148.0 F

Are you mashing 4.73 gal, then batch sparging with an additional 2.47 gal to reach a boil volume of 7.2?

I use a Rubbermaid 10-gallon cooler w/false bottom for my mash tun with a single infusion of water. I'm trying to hit a mash temp of 148-F. The 159.2-F is Beersmith calculating the strike temp of the water, without consideration for heating up the mash tun. For me, I usually heat my strike +9 degrees over the 159.2-F, and put that in the tun first. Wait 10 minutes, and it should then be at ~159-160... then I add my grains. With a good stir, I am usually right at 148-F.

For sparging, I use a single batch sparge (4.45 gals @ 168-F) after draining the 1st runnings to the kettle. If all goes well, I should have 7.2 gallons in the kettle for the boil. (Those are Beersmith calculated numbers..and remember that the grain absorbs quite a bit, so *ideally* your 1st & 2nd runnings should yield about 3.6 gals each (3.6 x 2 = 7.2) ... )

Finally, is 90 min necessary here?

You could get buy with less .. 60 mins. It would change your volumes slightly, since you are boiling less time. Many folks like the longer boils for more kettle carmelization. :)

BTW, my 3rd time on this recipe, I backed off the Crystal 10L a bit. I only used 1.0# of Crystal 10L ... to help reduce the sweetness a bit. I liked it better this way. :)

Good luck!

Did mashing at 148° work out? That seems low to me.

What was your final gravity reading?

It worked out great. At first I thought it should have been higher,but after hearing an interview with their brewer.. he said they mash at 148. My FG is usually around 1014.
